PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To allow digital recording with a video recording device in which a digital signal containing video and sound is inputted from outside for digital recording, by automatically judging an appropriate recording rate without user's selection of a bit rate for digital recording. SOLUTION: A recording rate judging part 13 is provided where the information related to a maximum bit rate contained in the digital signal comprising video and sound which is inputted from a digital signal input part 11 as well as the information about kind of the video signal are detected while the bit rate of the inputted digital signal is measured, based on which a recording rate is judged and transmitted to a digital signal recording part 12. Thus, an appropriate recording rate is automatically judged for digital recording.
