The lift installation comprises a lift cage (10) and a counterweight (12) moving in a shaft and a rotary machine which rotates a traction pulley (38). Suspension of the cage and the counter weight is assured by a cable (14) whilst their linear movement is assured by a driving belt (30). The driving belt is connected to the cage and/or the counterweight and is wound around the traction pulley with a rubbing contact so that when the traction pulley is rotated it displaces in its turn the cage and the counterweight.
