PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a negative electrode having good balance among highly efficient discharge characteristics, low temperature characteristics and cycle life and being effective for providing a highly safe nonaqueous electrolyte secon dary battery. SOLUTION: This negative electrode for the nonaqueous electrolyte secondary battery contains a carbon material as an active material and particulate modified styrene-butadiene rubber as a binder. The surface area of the carbon material contained in the negative electrode is 300-600 m2 per 1 g of the particulate modified styrene-butadiene rubber.
