PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To suppress the required memory capacity at the time of reading a document with high resolution by shifting pixels and to decrease the number of times for shifting the focus position of an optical image on an image sensor. SOLUTION: The method for reading a document (1) using a CIS (3) which converts the optical image of the document into an electric signal and outputs an image signal comprises imaging steps (S2-S9) for dividing a read range of the document into a plurality of specified ranges, shifting the focus position on the CIS of the optical image of the document in a specified direction by a plurality of different amounts for each divided and specified range and acquiring an image signal from the CIS at each shifted position, and a step (S10) for putting together the image signals obtained at a plurality of shift positions in the imaging step.
