The cow (8) is walked into the milking stall (1), where there is a feeding trough (3) and an automatic milking appliance (5). A framework (2) around the stall and a pillar (13) supports a pneumatically operated arm (11). On the outer end of the arm is a drive unit (10) which rotates a cylindrical brush (9). The brush is lowered onto the small of the animal's back. The abrasion has a calming effect which encourages lactation.
