MAGNETIC RECORDING MEDIUM

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a coating type magnetic recording medium showing a high C/N ratio and excellent durability in high density magnetic recording (especially using an MR head for reproduction). SOLUTION: The magnetic recording medium is formed by providing a lower layer containing a non-magnetic powder and a binder and a magnetic layer containing a ferromagnetic powder, a polishing agent and a binder on a non- magnetic flexible substrate in this order. The magnetic layer has 0.01-0.1 μm average thickness d and from 15 to 25 polishing agent protrusions/225 μm2 having 5-10 nm height on its surface. The ferromagnetic powder contained in the magnetic layer consists of an acicular ferromagnetic alloy powder having <=0.1 μm average major axis length and <120 A.m2/kg σs.
