PURPOSE: A counterfeit bill detector is provided, which has a high detection capacity and judges whether a fluorescent material is printed on a note, so being applied to a fast note counter or a cash automatic teller machine. CONSTITUTION: A light source(10) is installed to irradiate at least light beam to one end of a paper money. A reflected light sensor(20) is installed to sense light reflected from a surface of the note to be discriminated. A penetration light sensor(30) is installed to sense light penetrated through the note to be discriminated. A microprocessor calculates a value of light absorbed in the note using values of the reflected light, the penetrated light, and incident light. The microprocessor compares at least one or more values comprising the value of the absorbed light with a reference value and judges truth of the note to be discriminated based on a comparison value.
