The safety valve for preventing explosions by disconnecting section s of plant comprises a seal (5) mounted on rods (7) so that it is in the center of a housing (3). Springs (15) are attached to the rod at either end and the seal is held in position by retainers (11, 12). When the pressure across the seal exceeds a preset value on of the retainers is released and it moves to a position where it rests against sealing surfaces (9) on the housing.
