The unit has several lamps that fulfill a common rear light function and form several light surfaces (1,2) in the illuminating state and an at least partly transparent cover via which the light from the lamps emanates. There is an arrangement (5) that increases the ratio of the overall light surface formed by the lamps to the area of a minimal rectangle enclosing the light surfaces.
