The invention relates to a method for effecting the preventive display of transmission costs of internet and online services for at least the transmission of larger quantities of data such as FTP files by using an additional protocol element. Said additional protocol element is sent by the provider, can contain an indication of at least the volume of data of the pending transmission, can optionally contain additional price criteria, is identified as such by the nodes (routers) involved in the exchange, and can be supplemented with the particular proportional transmission prices. In a receiver PC, e.g. on the side of the browser, the protocol element with the cost display corresponding thereto is evaluated on the monitor after which the customer can initiate or terminate a transmission and, optionally, activate additional measures, e.g. the automatic initiation of the transmission at a later point in time at which the costs of transmitting data are lower. The introduction of the protocol element for all pending data transmissions as well as for HTML pages, for example, can be useful which, especially in the case of fast internet accesses, protects against the pointless delivery of extensively illustrated pages.
