The invention relates to a silica crucible and to a method for producing the same. The aim of the invention is to improve the thermal stability and handleability of silica crucibles whose crucible walls include at least one dopant-containing SiO2 intermediate layer. To this end, the dopant contains at least one nucleating agent of a kind and in an amount sufficient to induce the formation of cristobalite during heating of the silica crucible to at least 1400 DEG C. According to a simple and inexpensive method for producing the inventive silica crucible a crucible is provided with a silica crucible wall which includes at least one dopant-containing SiO2 intermediate layer. Said dopant contains at least one nucleating agent of a kind and in an amount sufficient to induce the formation of cristobalite during heating of the silica crucible to at least 1400 DEG C.
