The invention provides a cooling tower (10) which has a primary operational mode in which air is drawn into a tower shell (12) by natural draught and a secondary operational mode in which air flow into the tower shell (12) is supplemented mechanically. Each tower (10) includes a plurality of circumferentially spaced (fan arrangements comprising air inlet paths (80), each of which is defined between a pair of radially extending walls (48) and a top (82). Each air inlet path has a natural draught inlet (84) defined between radially outeer edges of the walls (48) and a top (82) and at least one supplementary inlet (86). The fan arrangements are configured, when operating, to supplement air flow into the shell (12) and when inoperative to have no or only a minor affect on air being drawn into the shell (12) by natural draught.
