The invention relates to the use of an aqueous dye preparation containing dye particles dispersed in a colloidal manner, and at least one dispersing agent which is selected from sulfonated and/or sulfomethylated lignins having an average molecular weight of at least 25,000, more than 50 wt. % of the lignins having a molecular weight of more than 10,000. Said preparation is used to print flat substrates by means of ink jet printing.
