PURPOSE: A liquid crystal display apparatus is provided to improve luminance and contrast of image efficiently, and to restrict heating of light source by controlling light emitting time corresponding to brightness and motion of pixels. CONSTITUTION: A liquid crystal display device is composed of a panel(27) arranging plural pixels; a light source unit visualizing image displayed on plural pixels; a controlling circuit(23) controlling the light source; and an image signal tone characteristic controlling circuit. The light source controlling circuit repeats a period including a first time period supplying the first intensity current to the light source and a second time period supplying the second intensity current to the light source, and controls the first time period and the second time period according to display information. The tone characteristic controlling circuit is controlled to enhance the contrast corresponding to display information.
