The invention concerns a method for making a component whereof at least one surface is coated with a carbon coating so as to harden it and make it self-lubricating. Said method consists in providing a 20AP steel substrate (10), and in bombarding a surface (12) of said substrate with a beam of accelerated carbon ions to: generate, beneath said surface, a carbon implantation zone (14) having a gradient increasing towards said surface, then in growing on that same surface a carbon-coated surface zone (18).
