A duct, with a fuel inlet (13), is formed in the interior (10) of a nozzle needle (5) to supply fuel to rows of spray holes (11). The fuel pressure, together with a spring (6), acts to raise the needle to inject fuel. A piezo actuator (1) through an hydraulic coupling (3) holds the injector in the closed position. Application of an electric signal to the actuator releases the restraint exercised by it and the needle is raised.
