A method for increasing the dynamic range of a receiver/control unit (6) of an alarm system (2). The alarm system (2) includes a receiver/control unit (60), the receiver including at least one antenna means (20) and antenna switching means (21). The processing means (32) includes a signal detection means for controlling the antenna switching means (21) by processor control of switching diodes. The method includes the steps of selecting an input to the receiver, wherein the input may be an output of one or more antenna means or no antenna means, and detecting the presence of a signal. The basis of the system is the selection of no antenna, which causes the receiver to be approximately 12dB less sensitive. The receiver detects signals from remote transmitting devices (4) located nearby without saturating the receiver thereby increasing the dynamic range of the receiver/control unit (60).
