Disclosed is a shift control method for an automatic transmission that improves shift feel and acceleration characteristics by determining if 4->3 shifting is required during lift-foot-up 3->4 shift control, and if so, the method controls a number of solenoid valves and friction elements with input from a plurality of sensors that stop the lift-foot-up 3->4 shift when the accelerator pedal is again depressed after being released.
