An authenticated scanner driver (11) with the protection against unauthorized use is installed in a personal computer (10), which transfers data to and from a color scanner (20) through the driver. The color scanner (20) includes a detector (22) for determining whether a connected device has an authenticated driver. If an authenticated driver is detected, normal image processing (data retrieval and transfer) is performed; if not, normal image processing is inhibited. The protection against unauthorized use provided with the driver checks for illegal processing such as forgery.
