METHOD AND APPARATUS FOR JUDGING RW DISC

PURPOSE: A method and an apparatus for judging an RW disc are provided to precisely judge the kind of a disc using a peak value of a focus error signal detected when the initial disc focus search is being carried out. CONSTITUTION: A focus error signal is obtained from a signal detected from a disc during one-time focus up-down section when the initial disc focus search is being carried out. The focus error signal is sampled at a specific interval. The peak value of the sampled focus error signal is obtained. The peak value of the focus error signal is compared with predetermined reference value ranges. Base on the compared result, it is judged whether the disc is a normal disc or an RW disc. The reference value ranges include the first and second reference value ranges. The first reference value range includes the peak value of a focus error signal detected by an RW disc. The second reference value range is larger than the first reference value and includes the peak value of a focus error signal detected by a normal disc.
