PURPOSE: An apparatus and method to fold and secure sanitary napkin flaps prior to packing is provided to hold flap materials at the folded position mechanically during manufacturing process without an additional adhesive or material. CONSTITUTION: An apparatus for folding a web of flap material to overlay the main body of a sanitary napkin(20), comprises a conveyor means(60) having a substantially fixed velocity for transporting the sanitary napkin having a web of laterally extending flap material; a flap folding station for folding the flap material onto the main body of the sanitary napkin; an indexing means comprising a pair of spaced apart finger timing belts, each having a lug affixed, and a finger means(70) positioned in the middle of the lugs. The finger means is adapted to contact and maintain the web of flap material on the main body of the sanitary napkin from the flap folding station to the napkin folding station. Upon completion of the folding of the sanitary napkin by the napkin folding station, the finger means has a velocity less than the velocity of the conveyor means, and the finger means and the napkin no longer contact one another. |
