PURPOSE: A thermostat is provided to reduce resilient force of a spring, to minimize time delay on a cooling water-sensing unit, and to improve endurance of the thermostat. CONSTITUTION: A thermostat comprises a housing(30) having a through hole(31); a wax unit containing wax by being mounted on the housing; an upper piston(51) opening the through hole of the housing by elevating; a lower piston(52) opening or closing a bypass hole(h) mounted on an engine(E) by being installed on a lower portion of the wax unit; a main valve(53) opening or closing the through hole of the housing according to the upper piston; a bypass valve(54) opening the bypass hole according to the lower piston; and a connecting rod(60) elevating the upper and lower pistons. Thereby, the thermostat reduces resilient force of a spring and time delay on a cooling water sensor unit while improving endurance.
