PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical material capable of improving compatibility with resin when compared with a conventional material while having excellent absorption or emission characteristics for a light with a specified wavelength and thereby capable of obtaining an optical member made of resin with sufficiently improved transparency. SOLUTION: The optical material is made by containing a specific phosphonic acid monoester compound such as 3-methoxybutyl phosphonic acid monoethyl and a metal ion such as copper ion, a rare earth metal ion and optionally made by containing them in a solvent or in a resin. By using this kind of the specific phosphonic acid monoester compound, the compatibility with resin is improved and the metal ion is excellently dispersed in the resin and consequently spectroscopic characteristics is improved in the case the optical material is made to be the optical member made of resin.
