摘要 PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a sufficient gradation characteristic even when a TFT-LCD panel is used as a light modulation element. SOLUTION: The light ray from a light source 10 is divided into the light rays 100, 101 by a half mirror 11 so that the intensity ratio of both light rays is 1 to 16, and they are made incident on TFT-LCD panels 14, 15 via mirrors 12, 13 respectively. An 8-bit signal related to the brightness among picture signals stored in a picture memory 51 is divided into higher order 4-bits and lower order 4-bits by a signal divider 52. The light ray 103 is modulated in the EFT-LCD panel 14 based on the brightness information consisting of the higher order 4-bits, and the light ray 102 is modulated in the TFT-LCD panel 15 based on the brightness information consisting of the lower order 4-bits. The modulated light rays 104, 105 are composed by a half mirror 16, and then projected on a screen 18 by a projection lens 17.
