PURPOSE: A process of preparing a sea-island type conjugate fiber having excellent raising and raising stability by increasing the strength of a yarn as an island component but controlling the elongation thereof in a low level after elusion of a sea component is provided. The conjugate fiber has excellent heat shrinkability such that it can produce a raised warp knitted fabric having excellent raising, touch and external appearance. CONSTITUTION: A readily alkali soluble copolymerized polyester as a sea component and a polyester having polyethylene terephthalate as a recurring unit as an island component are spun to produce a sea-island conjugate fiber which satisfies the following physical properties: (1) 160deg.C< temperature of yarn maximum thermal stress(Tmax) < 180deg.C, and (2) temperature section expressing 95% or more of yarn maximum thermal stress(Tα to Tβ):140 to 200deg.C. The sea component has a single yarn fineness of 2 to 5 denier before elusion and 0.001 to 0.3 denier after elusion.
