PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a scanning method and device for measuring optical density, capable of relatively saving time and being used for 'on-line' measurements, at the site of an object to be scanned and measured. SOLUTION: A sensor means includes a plurality of measuring heads 14. The object to be measured 17 is detected and scanned by the measuring heads 14 which depend on and are operated, on the basis that the selected measuring head 14 detects a reference object 20 arranged at a prescribed interval to the object to be measured 17 in the transfer direction of a print medium 13 over a printing medium 13. For this, the object to be measured 17 comprises a chain of measuring regions 19 with a specific color density value formed as measuring tapes, extended along the width of the print medium 13 in the diagonal direction to the transfer direction of the print medium 13, and arranged linearly. It is possible to use the individual measuring regions 19 of another measuring tape 17 as the reference object 20.
