PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To realize an effective base isolation device applicable to a small-scale building such as wooden dwelling house or the like. SOLUTION: This base isolation device comprises a plate member 11 fixed to a foundation 1 as substructure, the surface of which forms a support surface 14a; a protruding member fixed to a sill 2 as superstructure and protruded to the plate member 11 side, the tip of which abuts on the support surface 14a in a horizontally relatively displaceable state to support the upper structure; and a damping means directly or indirectly interposed between them. As the damping means, an elastic body 14 for forming the support surface 14a, a viscoelastic body 20, a steel damper and the like are used alone or in proper combination. The support surface 14a of the plate member 11 is formed into a recessed curved surface, and a caster 12 is suitably adaptable as the protruding member.
