PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an improved process for producing an ester by allowing a carboxylic acid to react with a compound bearing the structure of 3,4- epoxybutene-1. SOLUTION: The reaction is carried out in the presence of a polydentate ligand organophosphorus compound containing a metal in Group 8 through Group 10 and a plurality of phosphorus atoms where at least one of them bears a P-O-organic group bond.
