PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a graphite-based composite material which is superior to graphite and which can be used for a member of a continuous casting mold, impeller for fused metal or the like. SOLUTION: In the graphite-based composite material obtained by press forming and calcining a mixture containing a carbon material and a compsite material as the source material, the composite material contains aluminum nitride in the graphite and the proportion of the aluminum nitride is 8 to 50 vol.%. The composite material contains not only aluminum nitride but silicon carbide and boron carbide. The proportions of silicon carbide and boron carbide are 6 to 35 wt.% and 6 to 35 vol.%, respectively, in total <=54 vol.%. The composite material also contains nickel by 0.5 to 5 vol.%. In the method for manufacturing the graphite-based composite material obtained by press forming and calcining the mixture of the source material, the mixture consists of the carbon material, nickel and aluminum nitride or aluminum nitride, silicon carbide and boron carbide, and the calcining temperature is equal to or lower than the decomposition temperature of aluminum nitride. |
