PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To use a solvent by circulating in producing 1,4-cyclohexane dimethanol from terephthalic acid. SOLUTION: This method for hydrogenating terephthalic acid for generating 1,4-cyclohexane dicarboxylic acid by reacting terephthalic acid with hydrogen in the presence of a palladium catalyst in an aqueous medium, further reacting hydrogen with the reaction product liquid in the presence of a tin-ruthenium catalyst to generate 1,4-cyclohexane dimethanol, using the aqueous medium as the aqueous medium for hydrogenating terephthalic acid by circulating it after extracting and separating the 1,4-cyclohexane dimethanol from the reaction product liquid, is provided by suppressing the tin concentration in the 1,4-cyclohexane dicarboxylic acid aqueous solution produced by the hydrogenation of terephthalic acid at <=200 weight ppm.
