PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an air cleaner structure for a universal engine capable of reducing intake noises with a simple structure and of improving the efficiency of mounting work. SOLUTION: This air cleaner structure for the universal engine is characterized in that an air cleaner 10 and a fuel tank 9 are adjacently disposed above the body of the engine 1, an inlet port 20 to the inside of the air cleaner is formed downward at a position adjacent to the fuel tank 9 in the air cleaner 10, one end part of the air cleaner 10 is disposed on the one end part of the fuel tank 9 by overlapping them, and an intake passage 21 opening downward is formed by a part between a part of the inlet port 20 of the overlapped air cleaner 10 and the outside wall of the fuel tank 9, so that the air is introduced into the air cleaner.
