An apparatus for de-scaling a refractory surface of e.g. a kiln, has a non-stick coating (11) on part of the surface (3) and an automated device activating and de-activating a scale detaching device (6) in response to a temperature (T2) or temperature difference (T2-T'2) at that part of the surface. Preferred Features: The detaching device may be compressed air source (8) connected via a valve (9) to a conduit (7) leading to the surface. A controller (10) opens or closes the valve in response to the output from thermocouples (12,12') in the kiln wall. The non-stick coating is a ceramic known as TIXOCOAT.
