PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an extract and a compound obtained from a plant and having an anti-diabetes mellitus activity, and a medicinal composition, beverage and food containing them. SOLUTION: The extract having the anti-diabetes mellitus activity is obtained from a plant belonging to the genus Trichocaulon or Hoodia. The compound having the above activity is a steroid glycoside compound expressed by formula (I) or its analogues, and the medicinal composition, food or beverage containing them are also provide.
