PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal composition having low temperature dependency of Vth without deteriorating various liquid crystal characteristics such as threshold voltage and response. SOLUTION: This liquid crystal composition contains as a first component one or more compounds represented by general formula (I) and as a second component one or more compounds represented by general formulas (II), (III). Accordingly, a liquid crystal composition having good temperature dependency, high response speed and high dielectric anisotropy is obtained. When this composition is used as a liquid crystal display element, an excellent composition having a low threshold voltage is prepared. Thins liquid crystal display is highly usable as a STN and TN-LCD.
