PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtainγ-butyrolactone in a high yield productivity, efficiently and safely. SOLUTION: This method for producingγ-butyrolactone comprises (a) supplying a solution of maleic anhydride and hydrogen to a multitube type reactor charged with a Ru-supported catalyst to hydrogenate maleic anhydride and pulling out excessive hydrogen and a formed solution of succinic anhydride and (b) supplying the solution of succinic anhydride and hydrogen to a multitube type reactor charged with a catalyst supporting at least one kind of a metal of the group VIII and Re to hydrogenate succinic anhydride and pulling out excessive hydrogen, formedγ-butyrolactone and a solvent.
