PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To quietly and quickly start an engine so that a vehicle is runnable as soon as an accelerator is operated in an economic run system for stopping the engine during stopping. SOLUTION: A starter motor comprises a compound coil 6 connected in parallel to a direct coil 5 for generating a field magnetic flux. The compound coil 6 is controlled by an ECU 11 through a compound control element 10. The ECU 11 minimizes the torque fluctuation of an engine by the ON-OFF of the compound coil 6 according to the fluctuation of engine load to minimize the noise caused by the rotating fluctuation of the engine 1. Since the output rotating speed of a starter 2 is increased, when the engine load is minimized, to continuously press the ring gear of the engine 1 by a pinion, the collision sound between the pinion and the ring gear can be eliminated. Further, since the current carrying to the compound coil 6 is stopped in the end of the cracking of the engine 1 to quickly start up the engine 1 with unstable complete explosion, the time from starting to departure can be shortened.
