PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing an Fe-Ni based thin sheet in which cracking at the time of hot working and roll marks at the time of cold rolling are prevented, and having excellent etching properties and press formability. SOLUTION: In this method for producing an Fe-Ni based thin sheet, the upper face of molten steel decarburized by preliminary refining is heated, is subjected to slag refining, is thereafter cast into a consumable electrode, this consumable electrode is subjected to vacuum arc remelting to form an ingot containing, by mass, <=60 ppm C, <=20 ppm 0, <=10 ppm S and <=20 ppm N, and this ingot is subjected to hot working and cold working into a thin sheet. Preferably, the steel sheet contains 30 to 50% Ni, <=0.50% Mn and 0.01 to 0.03% Al, and the balance Fe with impurities, and, in the above impurities, the content of C is controlled to <=50 ppm, Si to <=0.03%, 0 to <=20 ppm, S to <=10 ppm and N to <=20 ppm. The sheet can be used to the production of a thin sheet for a shadow mask.
