The invention concerns a cutting bar (1) comprising: a frame (6) and a cutting mechanism (2) not integral with said frame (6); positioning means (7, 8) linked to the frame (6) and to the cutting mechanism (2), enabling to place the cutting mechanism (2) in a plurality of different positions along the front/rear direction of the machine; and a drum (10) having the same length as the cutting bar (1), located inside the cutting mechanism (2) whereon is wound a sheet material (11) with flexible structure, the free end of said sheet material (1) being fixed to the front edge of the frame (6), means actuating the drum (10) being provided to enable the drum (10) to rotate in the direction unwinding the sheet material (11) when the cutting mechanism 2) is spaced apart from the frame (6) and to enable the drum (10) to rotate in the direction winding the sheet material (11) when the cutting mechanism (2) is brought closer to the frame (6).
