PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for effectively producing a polycarbonate having a molecular weight full in practice use, by one step (stage) and in high-yield from an aromatic bivalent hidroxy compound. SOLUTION: A palladium complex compound has, as a ligand, (a-1) a polynuclear metal complex compound which has a plurality of palladium atoms as a metal center, and is bridged by a hetero bidentate ligand, or (a-2) a bipyridyl group compound having no hydrogen at anα-positioned carbon of a ring- membered nitrogen atom. The method for producing this polycarbonate is characterized in that the aromatic bivalent hidroxy compound, carbon monoxide and oxygen are subjected to an oxidative carbonylation reaction in the presence of the above palladium complex compound, (b) a redox catalyst and (c) a catalyst composed of an onium halide compound.
