PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an extra fine wire of high strength stainless steel having improved corrosion resistance and mechanical properties and capable of being suitably used as a precision filter, a high-mesh material for printing, etc. SOLUTION: The extra fine wire of high strength stainless steel has a composition which essentially contains, by weight, 0.05-0.10% C, <=1.0% Si, <=2.0% Mn, 10-14% Ni, 16-18% Cr, 2-3% Mo and 0.15-0.3% N and in which the value of A represented by equation A=413-462(C+N)-9.2Si-8.1Mn-13.7Cr-9.5 Ni-18.5Mo is regulated to -180 to -300. This wire is formed into a soft fine wire of 5-100μm wire diameter by means of wire drawing and annealing treatment.
