PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a polyurethane foam for coating which can mainly be used for a paint roller of a solvent-base paint or a sponge for waving a car, and is excellent in processability, solvent resistance, workability for coating, and durability. SOLUTION: The polyurethane foam for coating is obtained by impregnating a polyurethane foam with a polyvinyl alcohol having a degree of saponification of 75% or higher. The weight ratio of the polyurethane foam used to the infiltrated polyvinyl alcohol may be (10:1) to (10:6), and the degree of swelling shown by the formula: the degree of swelling (%)=[(A'-A)/A]×100 (wherein A is a lengthwise dimension of the polyurethane foam for coating; and A' is a lengthwise dimension of the polyurethane foam for coating after immersion in xylene at ordinary temperature for 16 hrs) may be 15% or lower.
