In vitro tests for neuropathy, and also for evaluating whether or not a subject will benefit from a putative drug for treating neuropathy, comprising detecting for the presence of a 75 kDa Neurotrophin Receptor (p75) in a body fluid sample taken from a subject. The invention also relates to methods for screening the efficacy of a putative drug for treating neuropathy, and for screening compounds to assess whether or not they cause neuropathy comprising administering the drug or compound to a subject and detecting for the presence of a 75 kDa Neurotrophin Receptor (p75) in a body fluid sample taken from the subject.
