A system for the application of thermal energy in order to cause permanent contraction of vascular structures comprises a catheter (1) and a control device (2). The catheter (1) is introduceable into a vascular structure and includes at least one lumen having an opening in the distal end region. The control device (2), to which the catheter (1) is connectable via its proxima l end region (5), is adapted to provide a liquid, to cause heating of the liqu id and to supply the liquid into a lumen of the catheter (1) and to apply a vacuum to a lumen of the catheter (1).
