Once the vertical beams (5) are on the load (1) a locking element (13) can be swung by hand into free setting to be held there by a powered holding element (14) engaging its finger (15) with a recess in the locking element. With the locking element in free setting, the beam (7) swings automatically into its loading position in which the rear end (8) of the beam swings into the path of the locking element (13). As the load fork (3) rises along with its load (1) so the holder (14) is swung into its alert setting by a mechanism in the beam (3) so as to free the locking element (13). The element (13) is now powered downwards to its end setting where it homes under rotative moment. At load (1) setdown, the beam (7), now freed from the load eyelet etc, is moved out of the element (13) by this moment so as to hold the beam (7) in its ready position.
