A monitoring signal occurring at a monitoring point, is picked up and split into desired-signal and noise-signal components. The noise component and at least one additional signal derived from the monitoring signal are input into a controller (412) which generates a control signal based on the signal-to-noise ratio that is input to a sound regulator.
