A variable-view arthroscope or similar instrument (endoscope, etc.) includes a housing tube (31) with an object input end (32). The housing tube (31) contains an object input assembly (50) and a portion of a light relay assembly. The object input assembly (50) includes an input lens (54) and a first mirror (56). In some embodiments, the object input assembly (50) includes a second mirror, and in alternative embodiments, the object input assembly (50) includes a prism (59). The object input assembly (50) passes images received from a viewing area to an object relay assembly (609) that transmits the image object to the control end of the arthroscope. In some embodiments, the light relay assembly is formed of two mirrored rods. A control (70) varies the position of the object input assembly (50) to change the viewing position of the arthroscope.
