PURPOSE: A manufacturing method of a thermal head is provided to lengthen a life span, and to improve the quality of factors by reducing the size of the step of a protective layer formed on a heating portion of a heating resistor. CONSTITUTION: Lower layer electrodes(14a,15a) having film of approximately 2 micrometer are formed around a convex portion(12a) of a heat insulation layer(12) excluding a heating portion(13a) of a heating resistor(13) and the vicinity of the heating portion. Respective upper layer electrodes(14b,15b) having film thickness to be within the range of 0.1 to 0.3 micrometer are continuously formed from the vicinity of the heating portion excluding the heating portion to upper surfaces of the lower layer electrodes. Dregs and dust are prevented from being generated during printing by reducing the size of the steps(16a) formed in a protective layer(16). The thermal head has long lifetime and high printing quality by making the size of steps of the protective layer formed on the heating portion of the heating resistor small.
