PURPOSE: An apparatus and a method for acquiring an initial synchronization in a W-CDAM(Wideband-Code Division Multiple Access) system are provided to reduce a time required for changing a code phase by directly providing the code phase moved to a code generator for changing a search window. CONSTITUTION: A microprocessor an initial position to start a search and a partial correlation threshold value about a correlation value to a code generator and a phase discriminating unit, respectively(S10). A synchronous measuring unit calculates a correlation value about a received signal according to a code phase of the code generator according to the provided initial position, and provides the calculated correlation value to the phase discriminating unit(S20). The phase discriminating unit compares partial correlation result values and judges whether correlation is continuously progressed by a correlation distance or a current phase is moved to the next code phase(S30). If the correlation calculation about all search windows is ended, the microprocessor compares the stored correlation calculation results and extracts the maximum correlation value(S40). The microprocessor compares the extracted maximum correlation value with a predetermined threshold value(S50). If the maximum correlation value is greater than the threshold value, the microprocessor transmits synchronous acquisition information to a demodulating unit so that the demodulating unit recovers a receiving signal(S60).
