The invention relates to a method and to a device for producing individual glass panes. Electronic devices, such as mobile telephones or flat screens, require glass panes of minimal thickness (in the range of 100 mu m) that have at the same time a very high surface quality. The aim of the invention is therefore to provide glass panes of a sufficient quality in an economical way, that means with minimal reject rates and high process stability. To this end, the glass strip (1), directly after being drawn, is provided with a protective layer in a coating installation (41) so as to impart additional mechanical stability to the glass strip (1) and to protect its surface before the strip is deflected in the deflecting unit (5). After deflection, the glass band is cut into individual panes in the cutting installation (6).
