When a mobile node 28 is in a foreign network, packets from a correspondent node 24 are addressed to the mobile node by a home agent 26. The home agent changes the packet header so that the source address is the home agent address and the destination address is a care of address for the mobile node. The care of address may be the address of the mobile node, or the address of a foreign agent 30. Identifier codes for the mobile node and correspondent node are included in the packet header. Tables of identifier codes and correspondent nodes are retained by the home agent and sent to the foreign agent in a foreign agent care of address mode (FA-COA); or to the mobile node in a collocated care of address mode (CO-COA). In this method, the packets are not rejected by a firewall or by egress filtering because of the changed packet header addresses.
